Curriculum Overview

New Cangle follows the National Curriculum Primary Programmes of Study for Years 1-6 and the Early Years Statutory Framework for our Reception class.

Throughout the school we use a creative and thematic approach to learning, primarily based around Cornerstones Curriculum Maestro which is mapped to the 2014 Primary National Curriculum and Early Years Statutory Framework to ensure comprehensive coverage of national expectations. Split into half-termly projects, the children are immersed in relevant, engaging and exciting themes. Meaningful links are made across a range of subjects as part of broad and balanced ‘Imaginative Learning Projects’ (ILPs) and to focus on knowledge, we deliver geography and history driven knowledge-rich projects (KRPs).

All KRPs are constructed around a rigorous knowledge and skills framework that provides clear progression and learning outcomes. As with all Cornerstones projects, each knowledge-rich project is supported by bespoke, well-researched lesson resources such as reading texts, videos and information cards. These have been designed to present instructions and information clearly, preventing too many sources of information being given at the same time. Further resources in the KRPs include:

  • A comprehensive, child-friendly knowledge organiser to help children learn the essential knowledge and extend their understanding.
  • Low stakes quizzes to help children practice knowledge retrieval.

New Cangle has adapted the Cornerstones Curriculum to suit its local context and uses other schemes of work where relevant. These include:

  • Computing - Teach Computing Curriculum
  • Languages - Kapow
  • Maths - White Rose Maths
  • Music - Kapow
  • PSHE & RSHE - Jigsaw
  • RE - Emmanuel Project that follows the Suffolk Agreed Syllabus

More details about how we have used Cornerstones Curriculum and adapted other schemes of work can be found on each subject page. Furthermore, maps of each year group's curriculum content can be found on the class pages.
