History
History at New Cangle
At New Cangle, we support all pupils to become historians by developing their skills, knowledge, curiosity, and depth of understanding about the past.
In primary school, history is the study of people, events, and societies from earlier times. It helps children build an awareness of chronology and understand how different periods — such as the Stone Age or ancient civilizations — relate to one another.
Through our history curriculum, pupils learn to ask thoughtful questions, investigate a range of historical sources, and draw comparisons between past and present ways of life. We aim to inspire curiosity about the world and enable children to think critically about how history has shaped the society we live in today.
In school, we have a range of resources to support the teaching and learning of history, including replica artefacts and a wide selection of books. These help to bring the past to life and enable pupils to explore history through hands-on investigation.
To link historical events with real-life experiences, pupils visit local and national places of historical interest, such as Colchester Castle and The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. Other ‘memorable experiences’ include school-based workshops and re-enactments, which provide engaging, practical opportunities for pupils to deepen their understanding and enjoyment of history.
We provide a history curriculum based around the Cornerstones Curriculum, which ensures coverage, progression, and enrichment across all year groups. For more details about the Cornerstones Curriculum, please see our Curriculum Overview and History Coverage,
The impact of our history curriculum is that pupils leave New Cangle with a secure understanding of key historical concepts, events, and figures. They are able to think critically, use evidence to support their ideas, and appreciate the diversity and complexity of human experience. Most importantly, our pupils develop a lasting curiosity about the past and a recognition of its importance in shaping the world they live in today.
