New Cangle CP Primary School

Governors

Welcome to the Governors page of the New Cangle Community Primary Schools Website.

What I am asked most often is "What exactly does a Governor do?" What I hope to do on this page is to explain a little bit about what we do and who we are.

Every school is required to have a board of Governors to help the Headteacher to manage the school. The law gives some duties and powers specifically to Heads and others to Governing Bodies, although in a well-managed school both will work closely together.

Governing bodies are often described as a schools 'Critical Friend', and this is part of what we do. We help the Headteacher to create an Ethos and Vision for the School (through its School Improvement Plan). Then by asking questions we monitor that everything is being done to maintain the Schools Ethos and that the school is constantly working towards achieving its Vision.

The Governing Body itself is made up of different groups who bring different views to meetings: LEA Governors who are appointed by the Local Education Authority, Community Governors who are individuals from the local Community, Parent Governors who are nominated by other parents of children at the school, Non-Teaching Governors who represent school staff other than Teachers, Teaching Governor who represents the Teachers and the Headteacher.

All the above governors are more than willing to talk to you and listen to any suggestions you may have. We can be contacted through the School Office or if seen in the Playground. So don't be afraid to approach us.

Lastly as you can see from the list of Governors, we have several vacancies, if you feel that you could give up a little bit of your time and would like to help then please contact me.
